Dr. Abdulkarim Awadh

Comprehensive Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) Services

At Serene Psychiatry Hospital, Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is performed by a specialized medical team using modern, advanced equipment in a safe and comfortable clinical setting. ECT is a proven, evidence-based treatment that has helped countless patients achieve rapid recovery from severe psychiatric conditions — often when other treatments have not worked.

Our Core ECT Service Areas

  1. Treatment of Severe Depression — Including treatment-resistant depression, suicidal ideation, and psychotic features.
  2. Management of Mood & Psychotic Disorders — Bipolar disorder, severe mania, catatonia, and acute psychosis.
  3. Specialized ECT for Sensitive Cases — Safe alternative for pregnancy, elderly patients, and those intolerant to medication.

What Is ECT?

ECT is a modern medical procedure that involves delivering a brief, controlled electrical current to the brain using a specialized device. This current creates a short therapeutic wave that helps regulate brain activity similar in concept to how a defibrillator helps restore normal heart rhythm.

The treatment is always performed under general anesthesia by a qualified anesthesiologist, meaning the patient feels nothing during the procedure. Muscle relaxants are also administered to eliminate any physical convulsions. Because of these safety measures, ECT today is a gentle, painless, and highly controlled procedure.

By law and medical ethics, ECT is only performed with the patient's written informed consent.

“Your mental health matters. We’re here to help you every step of the way.”

Clarifying Common Misconceptions

The outdated term "electroshock therapy" is inaccurate and misleading there are no "shocks" involved in modern ECT. Even the word "convulsive" in the original English name no longer reflects how the treatment is performed today, as muscle relaxants completely prevent any convulsions.

Much of the fear surrounding ECT comes from historical practices decades ago, patients received high electrical doses without anesthesia, which sometimes caused memory loss, physical injury, and other side effects. Modern ECT is entirely different: it is safe, precise, and patient-centered.

In fact, many patients who have undergone ECT describe it as "the magic of psychiatry" due to its life-changing results.

Why Is ECT Performed?

ECT can provide rapid and significant improvement in severe psychiatric symptoms. It is used to treat:

  1. Severe Depression — Especially when accompanied by psychosis, suicidal thoughts, or refusal to eat.
  2. Treatment-Resistant Depression — Severe depression that does not improve with medication or psychotherapy.
  3. Severe Mania (Bipolar Disorder) — Characterized by extreme euphoria, agitation, excessive activity, impulsive or risky behavior, poor decision-making, substance use, or psychosis. ECT helps stabilize mood, reduce medication needs, and act as an effective antidepressant, anti-manic, and mood stabilizer.
  4. Catatonia — Marked by lack of movement, unusual postures, mutism, or agitation, often associated with schizophrenia or other psychiatric and medical conditions.
  5. Acute Psychosis — When psychosis does not respond to medication, ECT can prevent it from becoming chronic.
  6. Severe Agitation & Aggression in Dementia — When symptoms significantly affect the patient's quality of life and are difficult to manage with medication.
  7. Certain Cases of Epilepsy — Particularly when the condition is resistant to standard medical treatment.

When ECT May Be Safer Than Medication

ECT is sometimes the preferred treatment when medications are unsuitable or risky, including:

  • During pregnancy — When psychiatric medications may pose risks to the developing fetus.
  • In elderly patients — Who may not tolerate the side effects of psychiatric drugs.
  • For patients who prefer ECT — Based on personal choice, medical history, or treatment response.
